Partner of Carey and co-head of the firm's Environment Group. His practice focuses on environmental law, including advice on the Environmental Impact Assessment System, audits, waste management, sectoral permits, ESG and administrative procedures, and litigation related to energy, mining, aquaculture, forestry, health, and real estate projects, among others.


REPRESENTATIVE EXPERIENCE

  • Codelco on an Association Agreement with Sociedad Química y Minera de Chile (SQM), which regulates all the stages, rights, obligations and terms and conditions to optimize, modernize, and enhance the lithium production in the Atacama salt flat (salar de Atacama) between the years 2025 and 2060.
  • AIMCo and Forest Investment Associates on the purchase of 182 forestry real estate properties from Manulife for USD142 million. The advice included the asset purchase agreement, the operation contracts, and the corporate and tax structuring of the investment in Chile.
  • Sonnedix on its successful defense in a claim filed before the 2nd Environmental Court challenging the environmental approval of the Meseta de Los Andes solar PV plant.
  • Pan American Silver on the acquisition of all of the issued and outstanding common shares of Yamana Gold for USD4.8 billion. The operation included, among others, the El Peñón and Minera Florida mining projects in Chile, and the granting of securities for the amendment of an existing credit agreement with Canadian financial institutions.
  • The Freyja Foundation on the purchase of approx. 300 hectares of native forest of high ecological value in a strategic part of the Cochamó Valley, for land conservation.
  • Nova Austral, a Chilean salmon farmer and processor owned by Altor, on its defense in five sanctioning proceedings initiated against it by the Superintendence of the Environment due to different alleged infringements at several farming centres, including overproduction, environmental damage and avoidance of the Environmental Assessment System.
  • Marimaca on corporate, regulatory, environmental, mining and main supplies matters for the implementation of its copper project Marimaca in the Antofagasta region.
  • Capstone Mining Corp., a Canadian based company, on a USD3.3 billion joint venture with Mantos Copper. Capstone’s shareholders acquired a 60.2% stake in the new mining company, which operates as Capstone Copper. Mantos’ shareholders acquired the remaining minority interest. Capstone Copper operates the Chilean mining projects Mantoverde, Mantos Copper and Santo Domingo.
  • Hapag-Lloyd, a German listed company and global leader in container shipping, on the acquisition, for approx. USD1 billion, of the port terminals and inland logistics business of SAAM, a Chilean listed multinational company that provides foreign trade services. Hapag-Lloyd acquired the entire operation of the port terminals business of SAAM, which includes ten terminals in six countries in the Americas, and of the inland logistics business of SAAM.
  • BlackRock on environmental and permitting matters related to the acquisition of a portfolio of PMGD photovoltaic projects.
  • PROREP on the constitution of its collective management system for container and packaging waste within the context of the Law about Extended Producer Responsibility.
  • Astaldi, a concessionaire of the Embalse Punilla project, on its defense against an environmental damage responsibility claim filed by a group of people before the Third Environmental Court. Additionally, on its defense in a claim filed by a group of people before the Environmental Assessment Service against the Environmental Approval Resolution of the transmission line for La Punilla reservoir.
